Babesia parasites are obligate intraerythrocytic protozoa capable of invading a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Babesia microti has emerged as a new life-threatening zoonosis in the world causing a disease in humans and rodents. The infection is usually asymptomatic. However, immunocompromised and elder people may develop moderate to serious symptoms.
GPI12 is a member of GPI anchored membrane proteins that represent a specific marker of Babesia infection.
