Introduction

Pro-inflammatory and pyrogenic cytokine IL-1 alpha is a member of the interleukin 1 cytokine family. IL-1 alpha is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in various immune responses, inflammatory processes, and hematopoiesis. It is produced by monocytes and macrophages as a precursor, which is proteolytically processed and released in response to cell injury and induces apoptosis. IL-1 alpha stimulates T-cell proliferation by inducing IL-2 release, B-cell maturation and proliferation, and many other pro-inflammatory stimuli.

Description

The IL-1alpha is produced as a 31 kDa precursor, which is proteolytically cleaved to mature IL-1alpha (18 kDa) and N-terminal propiece (IL1NTP, 13 kDa). The IL-1alpha precursor is associated with chromatin in the cell nucleus with unknown function.
